In Support of Buchanan’s Medal Nomination

Rep. Riley Moore (R-WV) recently called for President Donald Trump to bestow the Presidential Medal of Freedom upon Pat Buchanan. Talking to The American Conservative – founded by Buchanan himself – Moore said Buchanan’s “unrelenting focus on the forgotten men and women of America paved the way for President Trump’s America First Movement. He was right about pretty much everything 20 years before most people realized it and should be honored for defending the American worker, family, and our national sovereignty.”

Congressman Moore is correct, and we at the Bull Moose Project join his call for Buchanan to achieve this honor. After serving in the Reagan administration, Buchanan ran for president in his own right in 1992 on a platform to “make America first again.”

Speaking later that year, Buchanan argued that the working class “are our people….They share our beliefs and convictions, our hopes and our dreams. They are the conservatives of the heart.” He urged politicians to “reconnect with them. We need to let them know we know how bad they’re hurting. They don’t expect miracles of us, but they need to know we care.”

His message of focusing on our own people at home and realism abroad has reverberated through the decades. And now, thirty years later, President Trump has picked up where he left off and is leading the way on reconnecting with those forgotten Americans. As he does so, we encourage him to recognize Pat Buchanan for his role in helping to make America great again.
