The Future of the West Depends on Giorgia Meloni

Late last year, the Trump administration released its National Security Strategy. Declaring the Old World was engaged in “civilizational erasure,” it decried Europe’s restrictions on free speech, mass migration, the sidelining of Christian beliefs and values, and Brussels’ desire to replace Western civilization with a globalized variant.

Many European parties have come to similar conclusions. Some have even reached out to members of Trump’s coalition in order to form a pan-Western alliance which seeks to push back against progressive ideology from the adoption of radical LGBT policies to the very notion that the West itself is a guilty civilization which must atone to the world for supposed sins. This is a welcome shift, and one which populists should not shy away from: patriots and nationalists on both sides of the Atlantic can restore greatness to their own countries while acknowledging a larger Western brotherhood.

But the re-forging of Western civilization, to truly succeed, must be carefully carried out. It must be organized and run by serious, dedicated individuals. And it can only be achieved if the effort is led by two entities: Donald Trump’s America, and Giorgia Meloni’s Italy. No other European country has the history, leadership, or capabilities to meet the moment.
