Book-ban controversy shows the need to break up Amazon’s online bookstore

Amazon recently banned the novel “Camp of the Saints.” The controversial book, written by French philosopher Jean Raspail in the 1970s, portrays a dystopian future in which the West and its institutions collapse under the weight of mass migration.

Although it had been sold on Amazon’s store for months, its publisher suddenly received an email stating that it had been removed as an “offensive product.” This explanation beggared belief, as Amazon currently sells many books which are objectively more offensive, including titles like Adolf Hitler’s “Mein Kampf” and the Unabomber’s manifesto.

After a massive outcry, the book was restored — the company chalked up its removal to an error.
